I'm still here, I just haven't been in a blogging mood lately. I've been obsessing over reeds without a lot of success. I've been experimenting with a few things, which always unbalances my reedmaking before I figure out how to use my innovations properly. Plus it's been really dry here and nothing's vibrating. Anyway. I did enjoy
The Darjeeling Limited this weekend, as well as
Double Indemnity. That's all for now, I'll post something better when I can.

Which innovations are you playing around with? Whenever I get out of sync with my reeds, it's because my proportions are out of whack. Measure and old good reed, (lengths and micrometer thicknesses), and try to duplicate it. Always works for me.
this is all for english horn, btw. first i tried some new cane, but the gouge was thicker than i'm used to, and i couldn't get it to a manageable resistance without being too flat (i've heard since that this particular gouge works better with a narrow shape, but i use a relatively wide one--Falstaff). then i tried someone's suggestion to make my reeds a little longer to increase their vibrancy (it was really dry here for a while and nothing was vibrating). but that had a similar effect--in order to get them so they weren't too hard, they ended up flat. so it's not as dry anymore and i've gone back to my old reed dimensions.
I saw the Darjeeling Limited last week! I thought it was a fun movie... though I became very frightened a few times. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of MA rehearsals!!
